Walleye Fishing can be fun and successful
Walleye fishing is very popular. The fish is one of the best freshwater game species. It can grow up to 20 pounds and is a good eating fish. It is a long fish with large eyes and has a white or silver spot on the bottom of the tail.
The fish likes large streams and lakes. The preferred water temperature is below 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Walleyes spawn in spring when the water temperature is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. They are night feeders and usually feed deeper in the water. They feed slowly, so bait has to be slow moving. If you want to fish with jigs, use a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jig with a white twister tail. During late spring and summer the fish go deeper or hide in thick weeds. In the evening big walleyes come out of the deep water and look for food. Smaller fish will remain shallower.
