Various Types of Kayaks

There are basically two types of kayaks:
1. Sit inside
2. Sit on top

In the sit inside kayak the paddler sits inside the cockpit. These types provide some protection from wind and waves. For more protection you can wear a spray skirt, which fits around the paddler's torso.

Sit on top models have a seat on top of the cockpit. The cockpit and gear storage are self draining. These types are great for warm days and activities on the beach or swimming. Most models have a method to store gear. Straps and bungee cords keep your items tied to the boat.

There are many varieties of kayaks available. The most common types are:
1. Recreation
2. Fishing
3. Touring
4. Whitewater

Most recreational kayaks are intended for casual paddling on calm rivers, lakes and ponds. They are designed to be stable, safe and easy to use.

Sit on top fishing kayaks come with provision for bait buckets, nets, rod and paddle holders.

Touring or sea kayaks are usually longer and faster. Most have spaces for camping equipment and other items. They are narrower than recreational models and don't turn as quickly.

Whitewater kayaks are durable and are designed for rough water. They are usually under 9 ft long.

All these boats can be made from a variety of materials:
1. Plastic is heavier and stronger.
2. Fiberglass is lighter, but more expensive.
3. Fabric is lightweight, but not as resistant.
4. Wood is easy to repair.
