Various Types of Canoes

There are several types of canoes available. To choose the right canoe, you need to evaluate how you are going to use it. Will you paddle alone or with other people? Will you use the canoe in calm waters for fishing or in fast flowing rivers?

Canoes come in various designs and construction. Different types of materials are used. The most common types are:

1. Wood Canoes
They are expensive, because it takes time and expertise to build a good quality wood canoe. They are usually heavier than aluminum canoes and not as sturdy.

2. Aluminum Canoes
Quality models are made of an aluminum alloy that contains magnesium and silicone. The alloy provides hardness and strength. Cheaper boats use an alloy that is softer and weaker. Aluminum boats are cold in the spring and hot in the summer. They are the most popular canoes, because they are lightweight and sturdy.

3. Fiberglass Canoes
Fiberglass models used to be heavy and not very strong. The new fiberglass material is reinforced with other fibers like Dacron and carbon fiber. Fiberglass is not very resistant to shock. A hull paddled into a rock can crack. When considering a fiberglass model, be sure to check the advantages and disadvantages of the material.

4. Kevlar Canoes
Kevlar is a lightweight and very durable material. It is best known for its use in bulletproof vests. Kevlar canoes can be very expensive.

Most common types are two seat canoes. For stability choose one with a wide beam, because they are easier to paddle.
