The Sage website suggests that you follow these steps when selecting a rod:
1. Determine the fish species you will be fishing and type of flies you will be using. Generally, the lighter lines are for smaller flies and fish.
2. Determine the type of rod action, like medium or fast action.
3. The rod length will depend on the fishing location. Generally, shorter rods are better suited for small rivers, while longer rods are better for large rivers and lakes.

Sage fishing rods are divided into 3 categories:

1. Premium Fly Rods
Z-Axis series are light, strong rods for all skill levels. The two piece models cost about $585, the four piece models cost about $645 and the Z-Axis Spey rods cost about $720.

2. Specialty Fly Rods
The Xi2 series four piece models cost about $665. The two handed, traditional style rods cost about $735 and the ultra light Spey models cost about $700.

3. Value Fly RodsThe VT2 rods feature a blue ribbon finish, titanium anodized aluminum reel seat hardware and chrome plated guides.The VT2 four piece rods cost about $400. The VT2 two handed rods cost about $575.



The Fli two piece rods are built with a wider diameter and a thin walled blank. The rods have resin impregnated wood reel seat inserts and cork grips. The two piece rods cost about $255, four piece rods cost about $295 and the two handed rodscost about $450. The Launch two piece rods cost about $175 and the four piece rods cost about $200.
