Enjoy the Convenience
of a Quality Boat Trailer

When choosing a quality boat trailer, consider several factors to get the right type. There are basically two types available: Bunk Type and Roller Type.

The Bunk Type models have rails or bunks. Most bunks are made of wood and covered with carpet. Some are made of plastic, which allows the boat to slide on and off easier. Bunk type trailers are generally less expensive.

Roller Type trailers use rubber faced or plastic rollers. They make boat loading, launching and retrieval easier. Roller type models can often be used on ramps that are not steep enough for bunk types.

Various sizes of trailers are available. To choose the right type depends on the size and weight of your boat. To calculate the total weight, you need to include the motor, batteries, cushions, anchor and chain. Also add the weight of gasoline and water. Water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon and gasoline weighs about 6.2 pounds per gallon. Finally, add spare parts, food and beverages.

There are single and tandem trailers. Tandems have 2 or 3 axles and can carry a bigger load. Tandems also provide a smoother ride.

The frame can be made of rectangular or square tubes, C-channel or I-beam shaped material. A rectangular or square tube is stronger overall. A C-channel frame is better suited for lightweight boats.

Most trailers are constructed of galvanized or painted steel. Some are made of polished aluminum. Galvanized steel is better for saltwater use. Aluminum is more expensive than galvanized steel.
