Portable Ice Fishing Shelters help provide Comfort and Weather Protection

Portable ice fishing shelters come in various shapes and sizes. This guide should help you decide to select the shelter that will keep warm and dry. Main features to consider:

1. Huts are available for one person and two person. Cabins are available that can hold 4-6 people. If you have much equipment a 2 person shelter would be more convenient. The hut should have enough headroom when sitting down.

2. Material is usually nylon, canvas or cotton. Thicker material is more durable, but also heavier. Thin material does not provide as much protection from cold weather. Shelters with thin material are easier to transport. A one or two person tent style shelter weighs about 20-30 lbs. and can be stored in a backpack.

3. Set up time for a tent style hut can be less than a minute.

4. Some huts have built in seating. Built in chairs should be strong and comfortable.

5. Huts should have at least one window. Inside flaps allow to set proper venting and lighting. Ventilation is important, if you use a heater. The hut should have several mesh vents with flaps.

6. Reflective strips offer safety when fishing during dark periods.

7. Bucket and rod holders are convenient.

8. Inside pockets are good for holding tackle boxes, gloves and other small items.

9. A clear pocket on the front of the hut for displaying your license. Some states require that the license is visible from the outside.
