Choose the right
Oars for Canoes

When choosing oars for canoes, you need to consider your size and the position you are paddling from. Generally, if you sit by the bow, use shorter paddles. Stern paddlers use mostly longer oars. Longer oars help control the direction of the canoe.

Recreational users can purchase economy paddles for about $20-55. The lower priced ones have aluminum shafts and polyethylene shaft grips. Economy models with aluminum shafts and polyethylene blades cost about $20-45. High quality models cost about $80-200+.

For recreational use, look for oars with a comfortable grip. A paddle with an aluminum or fiberglass shaft and a plastic blade will do the job for occasional use. A heavier paddle will be cheaper. For more fun and longer paddling, it might be better to get a light and comfortable model. For longer canoe trips, a durable and lightweight oar is important.
