Enjoy Night Fishing
Night fishing can be successful, if you start fishing after sunset or about 1-2 hours before sunrise.
The basics for successful and enjoyable fishing at night are:
1. Proper fishing gear and lures
2. Convenient location
3. Good organization of your gear
4. Safety
5. Comfortable clothing
Basic Fishing Equipment
A landing net and unhooking mat is recommended.
A net with fine mesh is better for carp. The handle should be long and strong enough to handle larger fish. A mat can save injury to fish from a sharp object. Some mats have raised edges to prevent the fish from flipping themselves off.
Location
Find a location that you can easily get to and that is not to far away. Check the cost and if facilities like a shop, toilets and showers are available.
Organization
It is important that the equipment you need is in good order. Keep rods, bait, landing net, unhooking mat, scales and a weigh sling handy.
Safety
You need to be much more careful when fishing at night than during the day. Know where everything is, especially hooks, knives and other sharp pieces of equipment. A good torch or a headlamp are helpful. Have spare batteries on hand. If possible fish with a friend and make sure somebody knows where you are. A cell phone is very convenient.
Comfort
If you are fishing in the northern part of the United States, it can get cold at night or early morning hours. Good waterproof clothing with warm layers underneath will keep you warm and dry. During the summer months have insect spray around. A hat is also recommended.
Night fishing can be a lot of fun. Have plenty of food and warm drinks available. It can be more successful than during daytime, because you don't have to put up with big crowds. Bring a camera and take some pictures.
