An enjoyable Michigan Ice Fishing Experience
Ice fishing does not require much skill or strength. If you are patient, a Michigan ice fishing outing can be an
enjoyable experience. Usually, the period between December and April is the time for ice fishing.
There are several basic things that are needed for ice fishing:
1. Ice auger to drill your fishing hole
2. Skimmer to keep your hole ice free
3. Short, sturdy fishing rod, about 18-24 inches long
4. Tip up that signals when a fish is on the line
5. Bucket to hold your bait
6. Hooks, lures and jigs
7. Sled to haul all your equipment onto the ice
8. Small chair to sit on
Some ice fishermen like to sit in their own portable shanties. Shanties are small shelters that help protect you from cold
wind and blowing snow.
A popular location is Houghton Lake, Michigan's largest inland lake. Usually, plenty of bluegills and crappies are
caught here. Further north is Otsego Lake near the city of Gaylord, where walleye and pike can be caught.
