Basic Kayak Paddling Technique

The basic kayak paddling technique is easy to learn. If you are just starting, it might be a good idea to have somebody help you.

For a basic stroke, you sit up straight and use one paddle. Put the paddle in the water near your feet. You have to paddle on either side of the kayak. When holding the paddle, the arms should be shoulder width apart or a little wider. Make even, deep strokes on both sides.

Always keep the paddle in front of you. Your stroke should not go past your side. Keep the blade of the paddle vertical.

Once you learned to move in a straight line, you need to learn how to turn. You can slowly paddle on the opposite side of the direction you want to go. You can also make more powerful strokes on one side.

Another way to turn is to drag the blade behind you in the water close to the kayak. This will make the boat turn to the same side as the blade is on. To turn to the other side, drag the blade on the other side of the kayak.

For safety, always wear a life vest.
