Ice Augers

Making a hole through one foot or more of ice requires a lot of strength. Ice augers are available that can drill a hole fast and easy. Hand and a variety of power augers are offered by several companies.

A hand auger is economical, quiet and easy to carry. A common hand model has a 6 inch blade. Also available are 4 inch and 8 inch blades. Price is about $50-80.

Power augers are usually powered with a two cycle motor. With two cycle motors you have to mix gas and oil, which sometimes can get messy. With four cycle motors, you don't have mix gas and oil. Four cycle engines start easier and run smoother. Price is about $300-500.

There are also electric power models available. They produce no fumes and are very quiet.

When using a power auger, be sure you wear shoes with cleats to maintain good footing.
