Fly Fishing is an
active Fishing Method

Fly fishing is a little more difficult than other fishing methods, but it is not difficult to learn. The fly angler is more active than anglers using other methods.

Other fishing methods use a lure or bait that is heavy enough to pull the line along. In fly fishing, the flies used are almost weightless and cannot be thrown through the air. The line cast by the rod carries the fly to the target.

The fly angler's rod is usually longer and the line is much thicker than the ones used in other types of fishing. When fly casting, the line provides the weight to propel itself toward the target.

It is important to match the line to the rod carefully. Before selecting one, you need to decide under what conditions you will fish and what types and sizes of flies you will be using.

Most lines are 90 ft long and come in different weights. Heavier ones are better for windy conditions. Lighter lines are better for finesse fishing in calm conditions. Price is about $20-25.

Fly rods range in length from 6-10 feet. It is the most important piece of equipment.

Most beginners should select a line in the medium weights, a 6 or 7 weight line and a rod that will match it. A fly rod and reel will cost about $100-300 for the average angler, but the price can go over $1000.

The least expensive lines have no taper and are called level lines. They are usually adequate, but for long casts, a tapered line would be better.

There are floating and sinking lines available. Floating types are easier to cast. They allow you to use a dry fly, which stays on top of the water. The floating type is recommended for the beginning fly fisher. Sinking lines are for deep water fishing and are more difficult to cast.
