A shorter Fly Fishing Rod
is easier to use for the Beginner

One of the biggest considerations in selecting a fly fishing rod is choosing the right length. For the beginner shorter rods are easier to use. A 7 1/2 ft or 8 ft good quality fiberglass rod should be just right for the beginner. Youcan get a good medium action rod from Shakespeare, Fenwick or Daiwa.

Make sure that the rod you select will be right for the fly line. Check the manufacturer's designation on the rod shaft, which is right above the grip. The line weight will be indicated there. The proper weight of the line will achieve the right action of the rod.

The reel and the guides are mounted on the underside of the rod. The rod should have at least one guide for each foot length of the rod. Newer rods have small ceramic guides. The guide closest to the hand grip is a ring guide, which takes most of thestress during casting.

Before selecting a rod, have an idea of how often you are going to fish, what type of fish you want to catch and where you will be fishing.
