Patterns of Fly Fishing Lures

There are hundreds of fly fishing lures to choose from. For fly fishing these lures are called flies. These various lures can be summarized in 4 groups:

1. Dry flies are flies that float on top of the water, like mayflies and grasshoppers. The bass bug is an artificial dry fly that is made of cork, wood or plastic. It creates movement on the water surface that attracts fish. When using dry flies, a floating fly line is necessary. For wet flies, streamers and nymphs, a sinking line is required.

2. Wet flies, like small fish, float under the surface.

3. Streamers and bucktails are specialized wet flies. Streamers are tied with feathers and bucktails with animal hair.

4. Nymphs are another type of wet flies. They imitate insects such as mayflies, dragonflies and similar insects.

As a minimum you should carry 4-6 fishing lures. For dry flies, the Adams or Light Cahill, size 12 are good lures. For wet flies you could use a size 12 Dark Hendrickson or Royal Coachman. For streamers and bucktails, you could use a size 6 Muddler Minnow or Black Marabou. A size 10 Muskrat Nymph is a good lure.
