Choose the right Fly Fishing Line
for Fishing Success

For the beginner or occasional angler, the fly fishing line should be a medium weight line. A medium weight line will be appropriate for fishing in moderate size streams and small lakes for trout and bass.

The line should be a floating line and will cost about $20-25 for a tapered line. Berkley, Cortland, Orvis and Shakespeare are manufacturers that produce good lines.

There are two basic shapes (tapers) for fly lines: double taper and weight forward. The double taper is tapered down to the middle and then increases to the initial diameter. These lines are easier to cast.

The weight forward line has more weight at the lead end of the line. They are harder to roll cast and are not reversible. They carry more weight and are easier to cast in windy conditions.

There are floating and sinking lines. With floating lines you can use a dry fly, which stays on top of the water. Sinking lines are better for fishing in deep water.

A colored line is easier to follow once it is cast. The color won't scare the fish, because the leader has a neutral color.
