There are three basic shapes (tapers): double taper, level line and weight forward. The weight forward line has more weight at the lead end of the line. They are harder to roll cast and are not reversible. They carry more weight and are easier to cast in windy conditions. The level line is the least expensive one. It has a uniform diameter throughout its length. It is best to use with a weighted fly. There are floating and sinking lines. With floating lines you can use a dry fly, which stays on top of the water. Sinking lines are better for fishing in deep water. A colored line is easier to follow once it is cast. The color won't scare the fish, because the leader has a neutral color.
