Practice Fly Casting to enjoy your Fishing
Fly casting is a little more difficult than spin casting, but it is not difficult to learn. The proper grip is important.
The thumb is on top of the hand grip. Casting is done mostly with the forearm and not so much with the wrist.
To start the cast, pull about 20 ft of the line off the reel and lay it out on the ground before you. Take the slack line
between the reel and the first guide in your left hand. When you start the cast, lift the line from the ground with a
smooth, slow lift. Raise the rod until slack line is off the ground and then accelerate fast to about the one o'clock
position and stop quickly. The stop on the back cast forms a loop in the line.
You begin the forward cast when the line loop has completely unrolled. The forward cast should be a smooth motion,
stopping quickly at about the eleven o'clock position. This should carry the fly to the target.
Be careful, not to use too much wrist movement and don't carry the rod on the back swing too far back.
It is important to aim the forward cast high, so that the line unrolls 1-2 feet above the water and
then drops to the top of the water.
There is a lot to learn about fly fishing. There are good books and magazines available that will provide more detailed
instructions.
