Popular Fishing Line Types
in this Fishing Line Review

This fishing line review looks at some of the many lines available. Lines are offered for different fishing conditions.

A monofilament line is a single strand of line, made of nylon. You need to consider several characteristics when choosing a brand or size.

The breaking strength is always displayed on the package. It is shown in pounds. For freshwater fishing a range of 4-20 lbs is recommended.

The diameter designates the thickness. Small diameter lines cast better than thicker lines.

Abrasion can reduce the breaking strength substantially.

Colored lines are suited for some conditions. Popular colors are yellow, orange and green. They are good for cloudy or muddy water.

It is better to use a premium quality line, which has a smaller diameter, high strength and good abrasion resistance.

Fused lines consist of many layers of fibers fused together to make a single strand that is thin and has good abrasion resistance.

Braided lines consist of weaved strands of nylon. Some have a coating applied to the line.

For fishing in heavy cover or rough conditions, choose a premium monofilament or braided type. For fishing in clear water choose a clear, thin type.

For spinning and spin cast reels, select a thin, limp line. Baitcasting reels can use most types.
