Fishing Leaders can help prevent Damage to your Fishing Line

Fishing leaders can perform several functions. Generally, the purpose is to add extra strength to the end of the fishing line. The fishing line can be damaged by rocks or by submerged tree trunks. This is usually where the fish are.

Most of the time it is best to use the lightest test line that will do the job. Using a shock leader should help prevent your line from snapping, when you want to cast a longer distance. A shock leader is attached to your line with a knot, so it can slide through the rod's guides.

Most leaders are made from monofilament, stainless steel single strand wire, braided wire or nylon coated cable. The most popular material is monofilament, because it is less visible to the fish. A monofilament leader is also easier to cast. The disadvantage is that sharped toothed fish like walleyes, muskies, mackerel can cut the leader fast.

Stainless steel leaders are stronger than monofilament leaders. Stainless steel is not much more visible than momofilament, but it is stiffer.

Cable is more flexible than single strand wire. Cable will last longer and is better suited for holding on to larger fish. It is more visible to the fish and usually will get fewer hits.
