Crappie Ice Fishing
can be successful

Crappie ice fishing can be successful in small or large lakes and rivers. Generally, winter crappies are found 15-25 feet deep, but they can also be found much deeper.

When looking for crappie, an underwater camera is an important tool. Once you locate fish, drill a hole over them. Usually, drilling 2-4 holes around the location is common. The camera will tell you the depth of the fish. Keep the bait about 1 foot above the crappies.

Crappies average 10 inches in size and weigh about one pound. Since crappies are small fish, it is best to use a light tackle. Berkley lightning rods are good. Use a 3 or 4 pound test monofilament line and a small spinning reel.

Jig sizes should be about size 2-8. Jigs that imitate minnows are good. Small spoons and glow in the dark jigs work well. It is important to keep the line and bait moving.
