Crappie Fishing
can be enjoyable

Generally, crappie fishing is the easiest during spring spawning. When the water temperature reaches 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit, spawning starts. A good bait are small minnows and minnow imitations.

The fish can be found close to cover like brush or downed trees. If you are a fly angler use small streams and if you use a spinning rod, small spinners work good.

Crappies can be found in shallow water during spring spawning and in early fall. During summer and winter the fish prefers deeper water. Fishing can then be successful at dawn and dusk when they come up to feed.

Fishing in small lakes and ponds is also good during spawning and cool fall months. In the summer crappies look for protection in weeds.

Use an ultra light rod and a 2 or 4 pound test monofilament line. Short shank hooks work good. Size 6 or 8 are good.

Ice fishing for crappie can be very successful. The first thing is to find the depth at which the schools are located. You can use a camera or try fishing at different depths until you find the fish. Normally, anglers will drill 3-6 holes. Review: Crappie Ice Fishing
