Canoe Paddles for Fishing

There is a great variety of kayak and canoe paddles available in various lengths, blade shapes, grips and materials. For the angler and recreational paddler, the beaver tail models are usually preferred.

They are shorter and more comfortable than the long, wide paddles used for cruising and white water. They also have a pear shaped grip, which is good for calm waters.

For canoe fishing in small lakes or calm rivers, a wooden paddle, 4-5 feet in length, should do the job. For kayak fishing you should choose a double bladed model about 7-8 feet long. Shorter types are easier to handle and in general the better choice for fishing.

Wood paddles made of hardwood like ash or maple are more durable than those made of soft wood.

Fiberglass paddles are are lightweight and durable. They are usually more expensive. Paddles with an aluminum shaft are heavier. They generally have blades made from a variety of plastic.

The shaft can be straight or bent. For recreational use or fishing a straight shaft is usually better.

Most manufacturers provide three types:
1. White water
2. Touring
3. Recreational
The recreational type is usually the choice for fishing.
