Bluegill Fishing
can be Fun

Bluegill fishing is more successful if you know the characteristics and behavior of the fish. Bluegill is a tasty pan fish.

It prefers quiet water like ponds and rivers with slow currents. You can be successful catching bluegill with live bait, flies and small spinners.

Common size is 6-8 inches long and weight is about 1/2 pound. It eats everything it gets into its mouth, including insects and worms.

It generally spawns when the water temperature is over 65 degrees Fahrenheit from March to September and year round in locations like Florida.

The fish is easily caught with any tackle. It is therefore a popular angling fish. Spring and summer are the best times for angling, because it remains in shallow water to spawn.

Use a light line and tackle for fishing. Serious fishermen use ultra light graphite spinning rods and small reels loaded with a 2 or 4 pound test monofilament line. Small hooks, sizes 6 or 8 work best. Wire hooks are good to use with live bait.
